Description: The action of the film takes place in June 1948. A group of Yugoslav students sent in USSR to be educated are coming back after the conflict between the two countries. Among the others who decide to return are Dragoslav, his girl friend Vera and his close friend Gradimir. Gradimir can hardly bear to leave the USSR, so that he suffers his own internal conflicts, which culminate in his suicide committed at Subotica railway station. Immediately an investigation is conducted on the occasion of Gradimir's suicide and so Dragoslav as his friend and travelling companion has to give an explanation of the motives for his suicide. Dragoslav's family is scarcely expecting his return home, further more his mother is terribly ill and lies on her deathbed. The father Stojan, a stonecutter by profession, makes a living and takes care of the family. They include Dragoslav's sister Nela who is a teenager and his brothers Kole and Kosta. Kosta, the elder brother, leaves high school just before his graduation and he is occupied with black-market dirty-works. There is no authority for him as there is unknown work living in the margins of ethical life. Dragoslav comes home and brings Vera with him whom he is going to marry. The first meeting of Dragoslav and Kosta ends with a fight as Kosta's opinions, according to the middle-class norms differ from Dragoslav’s. Immediately after that Dragoslav is arrested by the OZNA (Yugoslav post-war military police). He is accused off being a Soviet agent and is kept in solitary confinement. Time passes and Dragoslav's mother dies. His destiny is still unknown and uncertain, Vera is still living in his father’s house. Kosta is trying to help his brother but only succeeds in providing him a false passport for escaping abroad, which he byes with the money he makes from expensive penicillin trading. At the end of the summer when the father takes the other children to the country, Vera and Kosta stay home alone. After a terrible fight with Kosta's gangsters in his own house, he moves Vera to a rented apartment. Slowly their identified feelings become reality and they make passionate love. After that Vera doesn't come back into the house. Dragoslav gets out of the prison, but under condition of being a police collaborator and informer… It’s winter. Dragoslav comes home getting older and more burdened with numerous dilemmas of his previous and present existence. He knows about Kosta and Vera's love affair but he is trying to ignore it until the moment when Kosta tells him, that in fact Vera has been recruited and blackmailed by the Soviet NKVD with her brother in the USSR. Even then Dragoslav goes to Vera. His scorn is so dominating as he treats her behaviour as a "betrayal". There is no hope for Vera any more and so, being lonely in her wasted efforts, she commits suicide. She is found dead by Kosta who comes to her, completely beaten up, to tell her he is definitely going to live abroad. Also, on Dragoslav's advice OZNA's agents come and find Vera's dead body. Dragoslav fulfills his duty but he suffers his total moral destruction, where his life becomes worthless and without sense. He commits suicide right at the time when his brother Kosta, looking for his own better fortune, under a railway carriage, illegally passes the state border.
